What happens to chaos if you don’t engage? Nothing. It just goes on its merry way.
What happens to you if you don’t engage in chaos? Nothing…and everything.
If you don’t engage in chaos, it pretty much leaves you alone. It might swirl around you, but you can sit there in the eye of the storm, untouched – that’s the nothing. You are left in peace – peace! – with your ability to think clearly, feel cleanly and use your inner resources on what you want! That’s the everything.
What does participating in chaos look like? Engaging the engine and revving it up. Entering into a conversation with it. Letting it start a debate in your head. Letting it have a seat at the table. Allowing other people to bring chaos over to your house for a visit – you know it’s gonna move in, throw a party and overstay any welcome!
We can definitely recognize chaos. It feels noisy. It pretends to be important. It can be attractive, charismatic and dramatic – but it’s just messy, and not in a good way.
We forget that we have a choice. We can ignore it. We can tell it to leave. We can even be rude and tell it to shut the F* up and get out!
When I’m tempted to play with chaos, I like to stop and do a little color breathing. Green to give me space, gold for wisdom, clear for clarity, or pink for compassion. Or if it’s really bad, I pick up some colored pencils and work on coloring a mandala. I know, I know, but a mandala is NOT just adult coloring!
There is enough real stuff to handle. Why do we need this made up stuff inside our heads, when we can just watch it on TV any time we want?
In the meantime, remember these things: You are loved. We are all loved. Let’s all be kind. And in all things – progress, not perfection!
