Who is on your crisis response team?
You have one, you know… a crisis response team.
It’s the group that convenes whenever your brain detects an impending crisis. Like when you get bad news. When you’re in a dangerous situation. When there’s an accident or a medical emergency.
Not to mention all of the other shit that could happen and feels like a crisis, like when you hear about a potential reorg at work, say, or get an envelope from the IRS. Or when someone – a stranger – has an opinion about you that they just have to share. When you don’t get a response from that clever text you sent late at night. When you think you aren’t invited to that fun event coming up. When someone says they have some feedback for you. When your cat seems to be sleeping a little too much. When someone ghosts you, or (insert catastrophizing here).
Who is on the team that responds?
Let’s take a look at my team, and see who is helpful and who I might want to kick off the team:
Nurse Maggie “She’s good in a crisis” – cool, calm, decisive, level-headed and action-oriented. Yeah, she can stay.
Fearful Franny – She has lots of history to call upon, mostly things that have gone horribly, horribly wrong and she’s worried they’ll all happen again. Or, God forbid, some new horrible thing will happen that she hasn’t thought of yet!
Hurt Hannah – She’s always on the lookout for ways our feelings could get hurt, or we could be mortified. She’s very good at spotting the slights and the injuries. She can even conjure up a dig where one may not have existed.
Empath Emma – she’s pretty consistently trying to see how this impending crisis and our response might impact other people. She’s also working hard to figure out how it could have happened without assuming that there’s an evil plot afoot. I like her on the team.
Dad – how the fuck did he end up on the team? His advice is to ignore it and it’ll go away. Why be responsible when you could go have a drink at the Moose Club?
D’ RamaQ – Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, did you hear? (I know whose voice that is (not mine) but I’m not going to give her the satisfaction of saying her name.
Mom Maggie – Good friend of Nurse Maggie, just a bit older and wiser. She wants to make sure everyone is going to be okay, well-fed and getting plenty of rest, hydration and exercise. I like her for this, too.
Amy Poehler – I guess I invited her to the team long, long time ago because I knew that we needed a crafty comedian who could write a good script and also play a part when needed.
There used to be more misfits on the team, but I’ve kicked them out over the years. Actually, Franny and Hannah are still here only because they’ve been around for so long, but they’re not really voting members.
Dad and D’ramaQ just lost their membership, permanently.
Who’s on your team? You can pick your favorite celebrity and have them ask you, kinda like the “what’s in your wallet” commercials.
No matter what, you wanna make sure that the team that shows up for you when you need them is a team that truly does have your back, and will help you show up in the world the way you wanna show up. After all, it’s YOUR team!
In the meantime, remember these things: You are loved. We are all loved. Let’s all be kind. And in all things – progress, not perfection!
Love, and light in the pages,
